I was talking with a friend the other day about her struggle finding a low calorie option at Applebee's. She said she ordered a salad only to find out it had "a ton" of Calories. She didn't mention which salad. It could've been the Bruschetta Chicken Salad with a whopping 1110 Calories, 66 grams of fat and 3120 mg of sodium. Actually it could've been any of their regular sized salads (Fiesta Chicken Chopped salad, Grilled Chicken Caesar, Grilled Steak Caesar or the Grilled Shrimp N Spinach Salad) as they are ALL over 800 Calories! So the restaurant we've added today is for my friend. We recommend the Asiago Peppercorn Steak with Seasonal Vegetables and Herb Potatoes. This pick is only 380 Calories (a third of the Calories in Bruschetta Chicken Salad and half the sodium). Check out our other picks here.

California Pizza Kitchen, although started in California, is now all over the US and also in many other countries. They have a gluten free menu and a vegetarian and vegan menu. Even though it's a pizza joint, we are most excited about some of their non-pizza food! We did pick one pizza - the Tricolor Salad Pizza for our vegetarian followers. Next time you are there, try their Korean BBQ Steak Tacos. They meet our requirements for the 1500 Calorie diet and low sodium. Low sodium? Yep! They have 440 Calories and 369 mg sodium.

We have just added Chipotle and all but 2 of our picks are gluten free! The bonus is the food is also good for you! Chipotle has been ranked one of the top 10 Healthiest Fast Food Restaurants by Health.com. One of the appeals of Chipotle is that it is a buffet style, which gives you a lot of control over your meal. One of the down falls for dieters is that it is a buffet style, which means you need a lot of control over your meal. So keep that in mind when choosing a restaurant. But aside from having a lot of great gluten free and low carb options, the food is fresh and often local.

With over 200 items on their menu (50 of which are desserts), it's no wonder the Cheesecake Factory has been ranked America's Most Popular Chain restaurant for the second year in a row. With 200 items on the menu (50 of which are desserts), it's also the reason why we procrastinated on narrowing down our healthy picks for this restaurant! However, due to enormous portion sizes, they really made our job easier. Sorry my J-town folks, the lemon ricotta pancakes with 920 Calories and 112 gms of Carbohydrates, didn't make the cut!

In this week's SNL weekend update, Seth Meyer's interviewed "Paula Deen" played by Kristin Wiig. They talked about her new diagnosis of "the sugars" and her recent lawsuit. When asked if she said the "N" word, she asked - "you mean, Nutrition?". I've been to Paula Deen's restaurant in Savannah, but I didn't get a chance to see Paula lick butter or rub butter on a chicken wing!

For all you Panera Bread fans... We just added Panera Bread to our rated restaurants. We have chosen a variety of low Calorie, vegetarian, low sodium, low carb and gluten free options. Wait.. what? Low Carb? Gluten Free? At Panera BREAD?? Yup! They make some fantastic soups and salads. They were actually awarded a #1 ranking for Best Salads and Top Rated Facilities (for chain restaurants with less than 5,000 outlets) by Zagat, the trusted restaurant review service, in its annual consumer-generated 2011 Fast-Food Survey.

To follow up on my question on whether McDonald's should be teaching about healthy eating, I found some fun facts about the Happy Meal on a recent ifood.tv blog. You may have asked "what's the big deal about the Happy Meal?" or "who cares about a few ads for the Happy Meal?". Here"s the deal....The Happy Meal alone represents $3 Billion in annual sales. This is more than the TOTAL sales revenue from BK, Wendy's, Arby's, DQ, or I hop. So that one meal (sold to kids) represents more than all the food/meals sold at any of those restaurants. This is huge!

Some might argue that McDonald's teaching kids to eat healthy would be like a rifle company teaching us about Vegetarianism. However, this Friday McDonald's Corp will unveil new advertising targeted at kids as part of their pledge to include a nutritional or physical activity message in all communication with children in 2012.

I am often asked for my opinion on various diets and especially diet pills. Most diet pills are not considered safe long term and have a number of side effects. In addition, their effects only last while you are on them, leaving people with weight gain once they quit taking the pills. This story just printed on a new pill caught my attention due to its interesting side effect - memory loss!
