When you think cinnamon, the first thing to come to mind might be that delicious pastry stand, or your morning coffee. According to a recent publication in Delight Gluten Free magazine, cinnamon is now being sold in capsules! These capsules, sold by Carlson Laboratories, a family owned nutritional supplement business, contain 500 mg of Ceylon Cinnamon. Ceylon cinnamon, native to Sri Lanka and taken from the Cinnamomum Zeylanicum plant, is known also as “true cinnamon” for its lower levels of a potentially harmful ingredient coumarin.
Coumarin is a flavoring substance present in many plants; however, experts say that this substance is not actually safe in large amounts and can cause liver damage and blood thinning if taken for long periods of time. Cassia cinnamon became popular in the U.S. due to its cheaper cost and higher availability. The Cassia strand has also been subject to more scientific studies for these reasons as well, but no matter what cinnamon you decide to ingest, you are sure to benefit in some way! Although both strands provide health benefits, for those who plan to consume a good amount of cinnamon and are concerned about blood thinning properties for specific health reasons, look for cinnamons that have the source listed. Who knew cinnamon was so complex?!
This isn’t to say we should throw away our modern medicine and start popping cinnamon every morning expecting to be in perfect health. But, if you can get your hands on some natural cinnamon (a Cinnabon might spoil your health goals), research shows that it can have some major health benefits from treating diabetes by maintaining blood glucose levels in diabetes patients to fighting off bacterial infections. Cinnamon can also serve as part of your weight loss regimen as a sugar substitute on many foods such as your morning oatmeal or yogurt. There is still research to be done on this super spice, but for now, why not add more of this yummy ingredient to your foods and simultaneously enjoy its taste and various health benefits!
