Cassie Rowe, MS, RD, LD/N I came across a timely article after my last posting about the Paleo Diet; recent research that adds to the bundle of evidence we have already, telling us that people died from heart disease thousands of years ago—meaning it’s not a mere recent phenomenon as we are often led to believe by researchers today. Any guesses as to how we’ve got this info? Mummies. Yep, you read it right. Mummies. ![]() The Paleo Postulate

Cassie Rowe, MS, RD, LD/N A co-worker the other day asked me about the Paleo Diet and I had a moment of clarity: “Aha! That’s what April’s first blog will be about!” As I began writing, I wondered just how popular this diet is, so I typed “Paleo Diet” into my Google search bar. I’m wowed with over 10 million hits, but not really all that surprised. After all, we’re a nation of weight watchers—whether we’re conscious of that fact or not. Pump Up the Volume!

We have all heard that drinking a glass of water before each meal will help you feel full faster and reduce overall calorie intake. This is true, and water should be incorporated in your diet as much as possible. However, this is not the only way to fill up quicker and reduce calories! There are numerous high volume, low- density foods that fill you up faster, aiding in weight loss. ![]() A Food Fight of Epic Proportions

Cassie Rowe, MS, RD, LD/N Earlier this month a new “rule” was proposed that will prohibit the sales of any unhealthy snacks at any school that receives government funding (i.e., schools who participate in the National School Lunch Program). There's some debate about the outcome of this regulation and when and if it’s implemented (that’s up to you, since the general public has time to comment). Depending on the angle with which you view this legislation, you may or may not be for it. This might just be a food fight for the record books! ![]() Food Porn: Just in Time For Valentine's Day

Cassie Rowe, MS, RD, LD/N Yep! I said it. Food PORN. What is it? Well, it’s a term defined by The Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI) as “menu items with eye-popping levels of calories, saturated fat, sugar and/or sodium”, and it exemplifies the Xtreme Eating list put out by the same group which identifies the most unhealthy dishes at restaurant chains in the nation. When you think cinnamon, the first thing to come to mind might be that delicious pastry stand, or your morning coffee. According to a recent publication in Delight Gluten Free magazine, cinnamon is now being sold in capsules! These capsules, sold by Carlson Laboratories, a family owned nutritional supplement business, contain 500 mg of Ceylon Cinnamon. Ceylon cinnamon, native to Sri Lanka and taken from the Cinnamomum Zeylanicum plant, is known also as “true cinnamon” for its lower levels of a potentially harmful ingredient coumarin. ![]() Yay or Neigh?
